Lipan Apaches have served proudly and honorably for over 250 years as scouts and soldiers. As early as 1750, the Spanish at San Antonio used Lipan scouts because they were well known for their superior tracking abilities and their intimate knowledge of Texas terrain.
The Lipans fought in battles for Mexican independence from Spain and watched the Battle of the Alamo, where they were in sympathy with the Texian and Tejano defenders. However, they were not called into service as Indian allies by Sam Houston until shortly after the Battle of San Jacinto.
Lipan Apaches served as Indian scouts for the U.S. Army in the 1870’s and 1880’s. They have fought in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and all other deployments overseas in this century. Many of our women and men continue to proudly serve their country today wherever and in whatever way they are asked to. They are true patriots and heroes.
